about

The third single to be lifted from Wild Cat Strike’s debut album, ‘Rhubarb Nostalgia’ (released 5th October), is the engagingly catchy and offbeat indie/alt-folk song “Sickle Cell”.

With a hypnotic simplicity and a driving, funky bass rhythm, “Sickle Cell” explores lyrical themes of psychosomatic behaviour via the nuanced, candid delivery of frontman Danny Byrom, and it spirals out into a bombastic finale. The warm sound is enhanced by grin-inducing gang vocals courtesy of several fellow Brighton musicians (members of Delta Sleep, InTechnicolour and Tall Ships – collectively named by Byrom as the “God Damn Gospel Choir”) who all piled into the booth; while former band-member Guy Jones (of fellow Brighton rising stars LibraLibra) was recruited on synth duties.

The new edit here sees log cabin-dwelling producer and Small Pond label-mate Inwards departing from the techno direction of his solo work (which has gained high acclaim including BBC 6Music Recommends Track Of The Week, and heavy Radio 1 play from Huw Stephens) while nonetheless lending his trademark warped sensibility to the track. Teasing out luminous guitar lines and feeding them through the psychedelic and playful prism of his musical mind, he delivers a compelling and irresistible new take on the original.
